Debunking the David Archuleta Father Flap on American Idol

It seems clear that as David Archuleta continues with some success on American idol he will be slammed with criticism. Apparently so will his father Jeff. American idol frontrunner David Archuleta is battling reports that his dad is putting an extraordinary amount of pressure on the 17-year-old singer, even to the point of song choices.

Reports have been published that claim Jeff once yelled at his son during a recording session and even brought him to tears. But in an exclusive interview with Scoop from People Magazine, David's voice coach Dean Kaelin says Jeff is not a nightmare stage dad.

***

"Although Jeff is very much involved, I have never seen him do anything that would imply bullying, undue pressure or anything that appears extreme or inappropriate,” says Kaelin. “I can definitely draw a line between what a stage parent is, and how Jeff interacts with his son.

The report from People magazine notes that Jeff is a jazz musician himself and is very passionate about music. It seemed as if Simon Cowell suggested that last week's song choice by David was made by his dad and that has sparked more of a spotlight on David and Jeff. Who really picked “Idol” David Archuleta’s song?

So who really picked the song?

On Wednesday night’s episode of “American Idol”, 17-year-old David Archuleta insisted that he had chosen to sing John Farnham’s “You’re the Voice” on Tuesday night’s show himself.

Twice on the hour-long show, Archuleta questioned why judge Simon Cowell, on Tuesday’s episode, suggested the song must have been picked by someone else.

Cowell’s remark, to followers of “Idol” gossip, appeared to be a reference to Archuleta’s dad, Jeff, and recent reports that he’s more than a little tough on his talented son.

“It’s actually one of my favorite songs, so I’m kind of confused why they don’t believe I chose the song myself,” Archuleta said in a clip of him backstage after his performance on Tuesday.

Later during the live broadcast, an uncomfortable Archuleta again said he had made the song choice himself when he was asked about it by both a fan and host Ryan Seacrest.

So who really picked the song? We may never know. But Archuleta (and his dad) sailed through to the show’s next round on Wednesday, meaning we can all look forward to more speculation about his song choice next week.

Meanwhile, in the show’s main event, Chikezie was sent packing on Wednesday. No surprise there, after all three judges said his performance of “If Only For One Night” was dated and unoriginal.

Before he received the bad news, Chikezie was asked by a viewer during the question-and-answer segment if he was single. He replied: “I am currently very, very single.”

Will Dad Cost David Archuleta an American Idol Title?

Us Weekly magazine reports this week that the seventeen-year-old star may have flubbed his rendition of “We Can Work It Out” on the March 11 show because of pressure from dad Jeff. According to Entertainment Tonight, the elder Archuleta, 40, yelled at his son about the song's arrangement during a recording session the day before, bringing him to tears.

But American Idol vocal coach Debra Byrd insists this is nothing new. “I mean, nobody said anything about Jordin Spark’s mom or grandmother, or Diane DeGarmo, or John Steven’s mom. I could go on and on,” she says. “He’s just a concerned parent like any of the other Idol parents.” Check out more American idol coverage here.

David Archuleta's Stage Dad Has Idol Connections

Rumors are circulating that David Archuleta is dealing with his dad Jeff Archuleta, the stage dad from hell. But besides the fact that Jeff probably pushes his kid way too hard, he has previous Idol connections. His cached Loopwise page states that his company Arch Music Group has "spent the last 5 years working with American Idol and Star Search performers as well as young up and coming singers and songwriters who want to compete in the top 40 arena." Well we know he probably counts his son as the Star Search performer, but the Idol connection is interesting. As if David didn't already have the previous connection where he met with Idol producers during season one, now his dad has been working with show contestants. We'll do some more digging and let you know what we find out. This season of Idol is like a giant forest... of suck.

Most Downnloaded Idol?

Los Angeles: American Idol contestant and future American Idol David Awwww-chuleta has already won many talent contests, regional as well as national, but the 17 year old still seems to be unaccustomed to all the media attention that he is receiving.

A huge hue and cry has been raised in the past few weeks of "Idol", ever since VoteForTheWorst claimed that little David is already the producers' choice as the next American idol, and they are doing everything in their might to guide the little colt to victory.

One of the main reasons for these rumors is that on itunes, despite many of the current contestants giving outstanding performances, Awwww-chuleta has been the most downloaded Idol, even surpassing Kelly Clarkson. Infact, the downloads of all the idol contestants put together are humbled when compared to David's downloads of "Imagine"

David Archuleta & Hannah Montana: Finding Miley Cyrus a Boyfriend

Will it be American Idol meets Hannah Montana? One suggestion is idol crooner David Archuleta as a new beau for Miley Cyrus as she is desperately searching for a new guy and she is plowing through IMDb looking for a boy to date. Miley just finished shooting a video where she proclaimed that she was 'lonely" with dancer and BFF Mandy Jiroux and she recently split from Nick Jonas.

So - who's next? Good question and Page Six.com has something that might give a hint as to what Miley is looking for and the lengths she is going to go to just to get a fella that wants to date a multi-millionaire pop star slash actress.

The website has this, "It’s gotta be hard to find a good man when you’re Miley Cyrus — constant traveling, home schooling, parents who probably insist on chaperoning your dates — and the 15-year-old is revealing the difficulties of dating with such a crazy life. To combat her dilemma, Miley has turned to a very unusual source to find a guy: The Internet Movie Database.

“I need to cast one [a new boyfriend]. I check imdb.com and go through the new actors," Miley told J-14. Page Six has lined up the candidates, including their suggestion of American idol favorite David Archuleta.

American Idol: The Crying Girl prefers last season

Today I spoke with my old friend Miss Ashley Ferl, whose hysterical crying was forever immortalized during Sanjaya’s performance of The Kinks' “You Really Got Me” on Season Six "American Idol."

Ferl’s mom, Stacy, called me back before handing the phone to her daughter (now a freshman in high school!), saying I wasn’t the very first to track down the emotive Ashley this year. She had also been interviewed by the TV Guide Channel for a segment called “Idols: Where are they now?”

“I told her that’s how you know you’re a has-been, when you show up on a countdown list,” she said.

I assured her that Ashley Ferl could never be a has-been. “Oh, she’s going to like you,” Mom said.

It will come as no surprise to those familiar with Ferl’s effusive all-Idol-contestant-loving ways that she currently has five favorites among the top 11. “I am rooting for Jason Castro, David Cook, Kristy Lee Cook, Brooke White and David Archuleta,” she said.

She likes Jason Castro because “he’s not outdoing himself like a lot of other people are, and I like his hair”; David Cook because “he’s the cool rocker person this season”; Kristy because “she’s country”; Brooke White because “I love her personality and her attitude and her voice”; and David Archuleta because “who doesn’t like David Archuleta?”

But she did admit she prefers last season. “Why?“ I asked. “There’s no Sanjaya this season!!” she replied.

(Of course!)

But Ferl couldn’t talk for too long. She had a Carrie Underwood/Keith Urban concert to catch tonight in Anaheim. “I’m really excited,” she said. “This will be my fourth time seeing Carrie.”

I asked what she was going to wear. “I made a Carrie shirt,” she said. “It has a whole bunch of pictures and it says ‘Carrie rocks’ and it has stars and on the front and has some of her lyrics on it.”

(Of course again!)

Fans of Ferl can look for her in the audience on April 1st when the top ten perform. Executive producer Ken Warwick hooked her up with the tickets.

Being the crying girl, even last year’s crying girl, still has some benefits.

David Archuleta's Father Is Taking Stage Parenting to a Whole New Archu-Level

Yesterday, we wondered how American Idol front-runner David Archuleta got to be such a strong contender. And now we know — he has a crazy overbearing stage dad! Allegedly! Entertainment Tonight is reporting that Archuleta's less-than-perfect performance of "We Can Work It Out" on Tuesday's episode may have been the result of an argument with his father on Monday. Purportedly unimpressed with the subpar quality of his son's singing, Jeff Archuleta "yelled at David during a recording session … and even brought him to tears."

According to blog L.A. Rag Mag, this isn't the first time Jeff's lost his temper. Citing a "reliable source," they say he harassed several other contestants when David was competing on Star Search in 2003, and was eventually banned from the set after making intimidating phone calls to some poor 12-year-old girl (she eventually beat David on the show).

Sure, you can probably argue with his methods, but there's no denying that the guy gets results. Through some magic (and alleged!) combination of shouting, shaming, and forced ambition, he's managed to create the greatest American Idol contestant in the show's seven-year history. When was the last time we truly saw a stage parent of this caliber? Murry Wilson? Joseph Jackson? It's almost sad to think about all those movies and TV shows ruined by less-talented children whose parents hadn't been nearly so vigilant and/or domineering. Jeff Archuleta, Vulture salutes you!

Idol David Archuleta: Will he work it out?

How the mighty has fallen.

Tuesday night on “American Idol,” 17-year-old David Archuleta officially lost his place as the singing competition’s frontrunner. Not only did the Utah native forget the lyrics (always a kiss of death on ‘Idol’) to The Beatles’ “We Can Work it Out,” he never recovered from the mistake. Judge Randy Jackson dubbed his uninspired performance “very forced,” while Simon Cowell bluntly called it “a mess.”

To make matters even weirder, Archuleta said in his pre-recorded interview that he had been nervous about having to choose a song from the Lennon/McCartney songbook because he “wasn’t too familiar with the songs.” Seriously.

For Archuleta, the performance was a dramatic about-face. Just two weeks into the competition last month, the Los Angeles Times dubbed Archuleta “the Chosen One” and said “the competition is on the brink of collapsing in the face of a talent who lays waste to all before him.”

Unfortunately for the baby-faced Archuleta, his fall from grace happened to coincide with a downright shocking reversal of fortunes for a 22-year-old Californian contestant who goes by just one name: Chikezie.

The affable Chikezie had been shrugged off by many as a bore, narrowly missing elimination last week. But on Tuesday night he bounced back with a passionate performance of “She’s a Woman” that started with a bluegrass twist and morphed into an all-out rock song. The judges were floored, with Jackson asking “Who knew?” and Cowell saying Chikezie had changed in just a week.

One fan on the ‘Idol’ message boards summed it up best:

“Chikezie was HOTT tonight!”

David Archuleta Choked because of Stage Dad?

Our Idol fave, David Archuleta, appears to have a stage daddy just like Jess and Ash!

According to Entertainment Tonight assert that David was off his game Tuesday night because daddy, Jeff, apparently pitched a huge fit at a Monday recording session.

Sources claim "2.0" yelled at David during the session cause he wasn't happy with his son's singing — and even brought him to tears.

Awwwwww. How mean!

Reps for American Idol had no comment on the incident.

'American Idol' Judges Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson Say David Archuleta Doesn't Have Contest Wrapped Up Yet

When they're not busy calling people "dawg" or debuting comeback singles during the Super Bowl pregame show, "American Idol" judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul are clearly spending their time reading MTVNews.com.

That much was obvious when we caught up with the dynamic duo backstage at "TRL," because they immediately took issue with something we wrote about "Idol" late last month — namely that baby-face crooner David Archuleta had all but wrapped the competition up, based on the strength of his cover of John Lennon's "Imagine." (Check out MTV News' trip to Archuleta's hometown.)

Not so fast, they cautioned. Things aren't over yet — not by a long shot (which was a bummer to hear, because we totally had Archuleta in our newsroom "Idol" pool). And if you think you had the competition figured out by now, well, you haven't seen anything yet.

"He's in the leader's role right now, for sure, but also there are some other talented boys too. Jason Castro did [Leonard Cohen's] 'Hallelujah,' last week. There's David Cook too," Jackson said. "And on the girls' side, there's Carly [Smithson], there's Brooke [White]. They're coming on. It's too early to tell. You got to keep an open mind, America."

"For me, it's always been hard, sitting in the judging chair, because I don't like having to judge them. I would like just sitting there enjoying them, but I have to give a critique as well," Abdul added. "So I'll say that the final 12, they haven't really let loose yet. And I [am] — and I think most people are — looking forward to seeing what they have inside of them."

Totally. Like, is Amanda Overmyer filled with whiskey? Or is Syesha Mercado just as annoying inside as she is outside? And how about David Hernandez? Er ... OK, Paula: What would you like to see from the top 12 then?

"There have been contestants in the early stages of the auditions that come in and sing my songs, both male and female. And shall we say it's rather challenging. But even when they try their hardest and they're not very good, Simon will say, 'It's uncanny. It's remarkably better than the original,' " Abdul laughed "[So] I think when it comes into the final 12, they're all afraid to do one of my songs, so I would encourage one of the guys to take on 'Straight Up' or 'Cold-Hearted Snake.' "

Come to think of it, that would be pretty awesome. And as for Jackson, well, he doesn't think the top 12 really have much of anything left to prove. In fact, if he had his way, the one thing he would change is viewers' constant focus on the fact that some of the remaining contestants — like, ahem, Smithson and Kristy Lee Cook — were signed to major-label deals before appearing on "Idol." To him, none of that really matters.

"The thing is, they weren't successful [before], therefore they need this show. The rules of the show have always said you can't currently be signed to a recording contract, so you could've had 12 failed deals, and obviously you only need 'Idol' if those deals didn't work out," he said. "It's the wrong kind of way to look at it. It's a singing competition. It's open to one and all between the ages of 16 and 28. Come on down. Do your thing. Every year, we've run into people who were in a boy group or a girl group or whatever. So the rules have never veered from where they started."

David Archuleta - New Pictures - American Idol Top 12 Party

Idol's David Archuleta surprises hometown with fast-rise on show

It was no secret that David Archuleta could sing — students and teachers had heard him belt out holiday carols during Spanish class and an opera aria at a school arts festival.

None of that was reason enough to believe the junior at Murray High School would transform from a shy and impish 17-year-old to a fast-rising star on "American Idol."

"He giggles every time you confront him," Archuleta's 11th grade English teacher Chantel Thackarey said. "I can't believe how well he's doing because he's just so painfully shy."

Week after week, Archuleta seems to out-sing the competition on the top-rated Fox television show, winning the hearts — and votes — of viewers. Idol judge Paula Abdul has said Archuleta is "destined for superstardom."

"He commands the stage," said Dean Kaelin, a vocal coach who has worked with Archuleta over the past six years.

In spite of his obvious talents, Archuleta has kept a low profile on the Murray High campus. An A student with a quiet demeanor, he wasn't among the school's most popular kids, nor the star of school plays.

"I didn't see it coming," said Murray High student body president Adam Ward, who witnessed Archuleta's Spanish class serenade in 2006. "He's this little guy, and he just belted that music out. It was amazing. He's a notch above."

Kaelin recalls a similar reaction when an 11-year-old Archuleta first came to him for vocal training prior to appearing on the CBS network TV talent show "Star Search." (He won the junior singer division in 2004.)

Even then, the boy with dark hair and piercing eyes sang with a maturity beyond his years, Kaelin said.

"The thing that's unique about David is his sense of musical styling and phrasing. The one thing that is hard to teach is the sense of the music, the feeling of the music and the rhythm," Kaelin said. "It's intuitive. Sort of like a sixth sense."

Maybe talent is just in Archuleta's genes: His father, Jeff Archuleta, plays the jazz trumpet; and Lupe, David's Honduras-born mother, a singer. Both have performed professionally, and they've exposed their five kids to a wide range of music, Kaelin said.

David Archuleta started singing at about age 7, stopping only to recover from a paralyzed vocal chord discovered about the same time puberty began to deepen the teen's voice.

Kaelin describes his student as a focused, hard-working musician who sets specific goals for technical growth and understands that songs are stories, too, Kaelin said.

"It's about connecting with people and connecting with the song. It really wouldn't make a difference if he was on TV with 40 million people watching or if he was singing in a church or in a rest home."

Out of the spotlight, Kaelin calls Archuleta a genuinely nice kid whose family and faith keep him grounded.

"My personal belief is that he has no idea what a big deal he his," Kaelin said.

Big deal indeed.

Beyond viewer votes, Archuleta's soaring success has spawned dozens of fan sites on MySpace and Facebook — most seemingly from teenage girls — that wax about his heartthrob good looks and prognosticate about his being crowned the next "Idol." Other fans say they've been brought to tears by Archuleta's "gift," and a handful of young women have proposed marriage.

Back home in Murray, a growing fan club of students and teachers said they tune in weekly to watch.

"I have both my kids going at my house the whole time the show's on, with two phones, getting in as many votes as they can," school principal Scott Bushnell said a bit sheepishly. "I've heard many stories of students texting more than 100 times for David."

Thackarey said Archuleta deserves every accolade. Embarrassed by compliments and always more interested in others, Thackarey said Archuleta isn't driven by some hope of fame.

"I can't picture David saying 'I want to be a rock star, I want to be famous,'" said Thackarey. "He's more like, I want to do music because I love it. He's a follow-your-bliss kind of guy."

David Archuleta already won?

First, apparently the recording industry has no interest -- at least for now -- in the "American Idol" girls. Their focus is exclusively on two male contestants.

Well-connected record industry sources say major publishers (including Sony and Warner) have already set their sights on David Archuleta and David Hernandez. The record publishers have already told their songwriters to write songs specifically for David-squared, whether they win or not. Sources say this is the earliest publishers have ever committed to the contestants.

David Archuleta Gets Schooled

He may be the one to beat on "American Idol," but David Archuleta still has a lot to learn!

The 17-year-old gets on-set tutoring for three hours a day while on "Idol," but TMZ has obtained the required reading list of lil' David's 11th grade class at Murray High School.

While David has been belting out John Lennon and Phil Collins classics, students at his Utah high school have been trudging through the classics like "Catcher in the Rye," "The Crucible," "The Great Gatsby," "Macbeth," "Much Ado About Nothing," and "Hamlet." Will he win or not win -- that is the question!

David Archuleta

David James Archuleta (born December 28, 1990 in Miami, Floridais an American singer and amongst the top male vocalists on American Idol's seventh season as of March 2008. At the age of twelve, Archuleta won the Junior Singers competition on Star Search.

Archuleta lives in Murray, Utah and is a student at Murray High School.[4] If his bid to become the next American Idol fails he plans to continue school and keep singing.[5][6] The only regular job he has had was over the summer of 2007 as a sound "techie" at a park amphitheater.[6] He once suffered partial vocal paralysis but refrained from risky surgery and feels he has fully recovered.[6]

Archuleta started singing when he was six because he was inspired by a Les Misérables 10th-anniversary video he was watching, "That musical is what started all of this." He started performing as an entertainer at ten years old when he participated in the Utah Talent Competition singing "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton; he received a standing ovation, and won the kid division.

This led to Archuleta competing on Star Search, appearances on The Jenny Jones Show and CBS' The Early Show as well as meeting the finalists from American Idol's first season for whom he performed a spontaneous a cappella rendition of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from Dreamgirls.

Archuleta's mother is from Honduras and much of the music he listened to as a child was Hispanic-influenced; he also listened to jazz music from his dad's collection as well as gospel, pop, rock and "soulful music". He also loves Broadway musicals.

On his American Idol "Fast Facts" page he cites musical influences as: Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin and Bryan Adams. When asked to list his top pop artists he cites; Natasha Bedingfield, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bryan Adams and Kirk Franklin. He also cites Tamyra Gray and Elliott Yamin as his favorite former American Idol contestants. Like Yamin and another singer he admires, John Mayer, Archuleta aspires to infuse his pop selections with a soulful vibe.

In 2003, at the age of 12, Archuleta sang on several episodes of the television show Star Search. He ended up winning grand prize on Star Search 2. On one episode, he sang against then 13-year-old Alexandréa Lushington, who also became a "top 20" semi-finalist on American Idol alongside Archuleta.

Archuleta won his ticket to the Hollywood final auditions at the San Diego tryouts held at Qualcomm Stadium - July 30 & July 31, 2007.[17][5] He was still only sixteen during the Hollywood auditions and, along with other contestants not yet 18, will have to go to school ("doing schoolwork in the morning and then come onto the stage and then go back to the schoolwork") while a part of American Idol's seventh season.[18] His parents are also on hand, likely because he's a minor

Archuleta is considered to be one of the front-runners for his series of exceptional performances. After his rousing rendition of "Imagine" (arrangement influenced by Eva Cassidy) during the week of the top 20, all three judges praised his abilities with judge Paula Abdul citing it as one of the most "moving performances [she had] ever heard", and judge Simon Cowell adding that Archuleta was the "one to beat." Entertainment Weekly critic Michael Slezak stated that Archuleta "[has] shown more star quality and stage presence in two weeks of performances than all the other male contestants combined."

On 5 March 2008, Archuleta's single "Imagine" reached #1 on iTunes' album chart, while "Shop Around" charted at #8.
